Functionality 4,5/5

Although Skype has managed to reign supreme on the video chatting market, Google Hangout doesn’t seem to fall behind in terms of quality and useful features. One of the main benefits is that as long as you are on Google+, you can start a video chat in a matter of seconds. You don’t need to create another account since Google Hangouts works with Gmail.

Google Hangouts also has chat feature, where your messages are shared with everyone in your hangout. You can choose whether you want your chats to be saved by Google or not. If you don’t want them recorded, then choose the “off the record” feature. It means that all the chats won’t be stored on yours or your contacts’ Gmail histories.

Google Hangouts supports the Youtube integration which lets everyone watch videos together in real-time. The only drawback is that the video isn’t synced between all users, so while the video being watched is the same, it could be at a different place for each user.

Once you or any other chatter click on the Youtube button, the hangout group can choose any video they want to watch by doing a simple search. When a video is playing, microphones are muted to avoid echoes. If you want to be heard by other participants, you need to click on the “push to talk” button. When it happens, the sound of the video goes down, so people won’t need to pause it to hear you. If the video is muted, the “push to talk” button will disappear, while the microphone volume will be activated again.

Users can upload their videos to Youtube and share them with all participants. Even when the video is playing, you can still see your friends in the video chat — their images are displayed below the Youtube video. You won’t need to reshuffle your screen to see them.

Design 5/5

Google Hangouts is a practical and easy-to-use application. The interface is clean and simple, making it easy to recognize the key features. It shows all the chats and their time stamps. The people you’ve spoken with have their chats shown with a small circle, showing the profile pictures. Just tap the picture on the list and access a chat. While this is basic, the simplicity makes this application attractive.

Usability 4/5

Creating a hangout, you can choose a group of contacts you want to invite to your video chat. This post will appear on all relevant streams letting people know about an ongoing hangout and listing all the people currently participating. Each hangout session with video can hold up to 10 users.

When you invite somebody to the chat, they will receive a chat message with an invitation. Users who tried to start their own hangout will get asked whether they want to join the existing chat session or create their own. Each hangout has its own link that can be shared to invite people. Keep in mind that hangouts are created by one user, but everyone invited can invite others to the video chat.

Google Hangouts is a great alternative to Skype when it comes to hosting large, but informal, video chats.

Cross-platform use 5/5

Google Hangouts is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.

In-app purchases

Google Hangouts is a free app and doesn’t have any in-app purchases.

Conclusion

Google Hangouts is a great video chatting tool that provides an excellent user experience. Its ease of use and practical interface make it an attractive choice for communication with anyone of your group of contacts.

With Google Hangouts, you can start a video conference in seconds.
