Windows Media Player (WMP) is a standard player for Windows operating systems developed by Microsoft. It plays audio, video files, gives you the ability to copy/burn music from CDs, helps to organize your digital media collection, synchronize multimedia files and buy music from the online stores. Functionality 5/5 Windows Media Player supports most popular audio and video formats AVI, DivX, MOV, Xvid files, 3GP, AAC, MPEG-4, etc. So you shouldn't worry about installing any codecs. WMP has a kind of virtual storage - a library. The program displays all the music and video files there. WMP has a quite useful function: you can assign folders in which the program will search for files. So that you do not have to drag songs from different folders to a playlist, the program will automatically pull up audio files in one playlist from the folders you specify. Thanks to the straightforward navigation, you can search for songs by genre, artist, album, year of release, etc. Same with the video files searching: look for movies by genre, actors, year. The program can also be used to view photos.

Functionality 5/5

Windows Media Player supports most popular audio and video formats AVI, DivX, MOV, Xvid files, 3GP, AAC, MPEG-4, etc.

Photos can be arranged by dates and tags and also displayed in the form of icons. You can also apply to images all the features and capabilities that you use for audio and video files.

Moreover, WMP has a Play To feature that allows you to stream music and video to other PCs running Windows 7 in one click. The Remote Media Streaming function lets you log into your WMP library over the Internet and enjoy your files being far away from home.

WMP has other features such as the Now Playing mode that gives you a taskbar with playback controls, a DVD playback,  song previews and fast access to your favorite media.

Design 4/5

MP’s menus are nicely integrated into the interface's design and give you immediate access to the Windows Media Player's main functions. The interface consists of two separate player views: a Now Playing and a Library view. The Library view contains all the library manipulation features and tools, while the Now Playing view contains the current playlist, visualizations, and videos and shows the floating playback controls. You can use the left pane to browse the different categories in your media like music, images, video and playlists and the center area displays whatever item is currently playing. On the right side, three buttons Play, Burn, Sync are placed in the upper area and allows you to create the list for playing, burning and syncing respectively.

Usability 4/5

Windows Media Player doesn’t need to be installed because every Windows user already has it and it’s pretty easy to use and light on system resources. It’s capable of playing multiple types of media files, including various digital audio and video formats, CDs and DVDs.

This program also easily syncs with any external devices. You just need to connect a phone, MP3 player or any other drive to your PC and it will be displayed right away in the library.

Also, WMP can automatically detect other computers on the network and give you access to them. It’s a helpful feature if you’re a local network user. Windows Media Player can open files of all known formats, including Xvid and h264.

With WMP you can preview songs from the library by simply hovering your mouse over them and click the Preview button. Windows Media Player can also play unprotected songs from the iTunes library.

Cross-platform use 4/5

Windows media player runs only on Windows 7. It comes as part of Windows system and can not be downloaded separately.

Conclusion

Windows Media Player is a player and a library created by Microsoft and that can be used for playing audio and video or viewing images on computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system.

It is self-contained and is quite capable of replacing other media players. With WMP you can listen to the favorite music and watch a video right after installing Windows 7, so there are no reasons for downloading other programs for the same purpose. However, a lot of Windows users still use WMP, just because it comes pre-installed and they don’t want to look for other media players with a wider range of features.
