Functionality 5/5

Windows Live Movie Maker (WLMM) is free and has enough attributes to enter the video stream to the personal computer and to compose the simplest video clip.

However, WLMM has limited capabilities to control the camera and allows you to enter only the entire tape, a fragment limited in time, or start and stop recording manually. During recording, the video is displayed in the preview window. You can see buttons in the window that are similar to the control buttons on the camera and which allow you to control the camera directly from your screen.

The program can automatically divide the input video into separate fragments in those places where is an inaccurate frame change or where one episode ends, and the next one begins. To input a video, you can use materials directly from the camcorder or select video files stored on a CD, DVD and a hard disk. You can add various sounds and audio tracks to any video in the WAV, MP3, and other formats; record sounds or comments directly from the microphone during video playback in the preview window.

To make a transition from one video fragment to another nice and smooth, you can use various video effects that available in the Tools menu. Just select Video Effects or Video Transitions, and you’ll see there such effects like adjustable brightness, fade in / fade out and others.

Design 4/5

Windows Live Movie Maker has a user-friendly and straightforward interface. When you launch WLMM, a nice-looking configuration window appears on the screen. The left menu lets you enter the video, edit and save the result. In the middle part of the window, you will see a collection of audio and video clips, as well as images for later transfer. In the right part, you can preview all your saved results.

Usability 4.5/5

Windows Live Movie Maker allows you to create beautiful video clips, quickly edit them, add screenshots, captions, subtitles and any other graphic effects in a few simple steps. WLMM does not require downloading any codecs or other software. There is a section with the help if you have any difficulties while using the program. You can find there any answers relating to Windows Live Movie Maker. The help is available in many languages.

Cross-platform use 4/5

Windows Live Movie Maker is a useful program for creating and editing videos, and it’s built-in to all Microsoft Windows client versions from Windows ME to Windows Vista. There is an updated version of this program available for Windows XP as well as for Windows Vista. However, after the Vista was released, Microsoft stopped working on WLMM.

In-app purchases

Windows Live Movie Maker is an absolutely free program with all necessary tools for creating and editing video.

Conclusion

Windows Live Movie Maker is a perfect editor for a regular user, while it won’t be that good for a professional. The developers tried to provide the maximum of simplicity. Therefore, Windows Live Movie Maker doesn’t have a lot of professional features, but all the main tools are there. It allows users to master the process of video editing with such a great simplicity that if you couldn’t edit video in this program, then hardly any other movie maker will help you. So anyone who has a camera and wants to create a video can do that easily after working in this program for an hour or two.
