Like other similar software, Orbit Downloader accelerates downloads, making use of multiple connections to the same download server and searching for alternate mirrors to the same file. It also allows you to pause and resume downloads.
What unique about Orbit Downloader is its usage of Orbitnet, a peer-to-peer network composed of Orbit users. This network makes use of spare bandwidth to accelerate downloads for users.
The application’s specialty is Grab++, a feature that grabs incoming files from music or video streaming sites and makes them available for download. It’s especially useful when you download videos from video sharing sites like YouTube or Vimeo.
Orbit supports every major protocol, including FTP, HTTPS, and RTMP, and monitors all major browsers in use today: Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Internet Explorer.
Orbit Downloader has a simple, old-school design with gray panels and clumsy buttons. There is a straightforward interface with a window for downloads, the sidebar where you choose the disk on your computer, and the log screen with the download details.
Downloads are a little faster than if you just use your browser, which is nice with the slower Internet connection. Also, a nice add-on is the "Get It" button for easily downloading media files.
Orbit Downloader makes it easy to download a lot of files, but that’s not really worth all of the junkware it packages with it. There are about half-dozen different programs and toolbars this application will try to add during the installation. And the program itself is also riddled with ads for other programs you don’t want.
The small boost in features is not enough to justify this download. Even if you opt out of all of the junk programs, one or two will randomly start installing in the middle of the download anyway.
Cross-platform use 3/5
Orbit Downloader is only compatible with Windows XP and later. It doesn’t support Mac OS.
Orbit Downloader is a free application with every feature available for no charge. You just download it and use.
Orbit Downloader is a competent download manager and accelerator which makes use of both traditional methods of download acceleration like multiple connections and alternate mirrors as well as a unique P2P method called Orbitnet.
In practice, Orbitnet doesn’t really speed up downloads all that much, but it's a useful feature to have especially for downloads that users are likely to have stored on their hard drives. And the Grab++ feature lets you grab the audio or video files straight from a streaming service. It works very well on Firefox, and to some extent IE too, but it doesn't work at all on Google Chrome.Collapse
Orbit Downloader is a useful application for those who want to manage and speed up their downloads.
