Functionality 4.5/5

Trusted by thousands of users worldwide, TrueCrypt is easy to use solution for all confidential files and documents. By creating encrypted volumes to store private documents and other content, this program brings an added layer of security to your computer and the folders within it. Before anything else, users need to choose their target volume as well as the type they would prefer. The options include creating a file container that is already encrypted or encrypting a partition, not of the system. By choosing the latter, users can still protect the whole drive or the partition they chose. On the other hand, the former option allows users to create standard or hidden TrueCrypt files or volumes. Lastly, users are required to choose whether they want the target to be located on a fixed drive or a removable USB drive.

Design 5/5

As it is with most encryption software, the design is the least most important factor. This is not the case with TrueCrypt. Created to deliver a user-friendly experience for anyone looking for maximum security for all their documents and files, this program comes with a basic, yet well-thought out design that encourages users to freely explore the software. The text is clean and sharp while the options, tabs, and drop-downs offer an instant response. When giving commands, the program ensures that it is the correct command by allowing the user to confirm the command with a pop-up. This eliminates any chance of errors.

Usability 5/5

As mentioned above, the TrueCrypt software is extremely user-friendly and delivers unmatched performance in terms of securing personal documents and files behind its encryption algorithm. Users are free to choose from the various types including; Serpent, AES, Twofish, AES-Twofish-Serpent, AES-Twofish, Serpent-Twofish-AES, Serpent-AES, or Twofish-Serpent. Whirlpool, RIPEMD-160, and SHA-152 are the hash algorithms that are supported. In order to properly protect their containers, users are advised to create strong passwords that include lowercase and uppercase letters, special characters, and numbers. Users can also use key files to enhance the protective power.

Cross Platform Use 4/5

The TrueCrypt program is available for PCs running Windows only. It supports versions such as - Windows 2K, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 2003. It is not compatible with Mac OS.

In-app Purchases

TrueCrypt is completely free to download and install on computers running Windows. There are no in-app purchases and all features are free and open to use.

Conclusion

Offering close to the best protection and security software has to offer, TrueCrypt is slowly becoming a crowd favorite when it comes to setting encrypted passwords and safely locking away private folders, files, and documents. It is easy to use, and its clean design ensures even the most untrained users find it uncomplicated to operate. With a number of different encryption algorithms and hash algorithms, users can safely choose the best option for their content and confidential volumes.
