Among the all existing browsers, Internet Explorer is the longest running. It was once the most popular on the market, but suffered because of stagnation and let the competitors surpassed it in features and security.
At the time when it was on top, Internet Explorer became a target for malicious attacks and viruses. And recently, it has placed a heavy focus on boosting security and fighting malware. Among other things, it has added parental controls and several methods to detect phishing attacks.Read More
Internet Explorer is not the fastest browser, but it doesn’t skimp on its feature set. The primary focus is bookmarks and tabbed browsing, so when you open a new window, it shows icons of your most visited websites based on your browsing history.
Internet Explorer also provides numerous add-ons for a customized browsing experience. It offers four categories of add-ons: accelerators, search providers, toolbars, and Web Slicers. In each category, you will find multiple downloads, each with a detailed description. Most of them are free, but some you have to purchase.
Internet Explorer 11 has also added a security feature called SmartScreen filter that runs concurrently while you are online. When it detects anything suspicious, it triggers a window advising you to proceed with caution, or it may just block a site for your computer's safety.
Internet Explorer 11 has a nice and simple look, which allows you to access your Bookmarks, Tab Groups, and RSS Feed subscription easily and quickly.
Web searches can now be entered into a search box within the toolbar, which eliminates the clutter of separate toolbars. And selection and navigation through open tabs are easier with thumbnails of them in one window.
When you open the browser, you are greeted with a short search/URL bar at the top left of the screen, the open tabs go to the right, and other menus are at the top right. It means the vast majority of space is taken by the web content, which is a welcome refinement of the heavy designs in the past.
If you need more functionality, right-clicking on the top of the screen brings up a contextual menu from which you can select the toolbars to be displayed. It’s also easy to import your bookmarks from other browsers by clicking on the Star icon, and then adjusting the import options in the dropdown menu.
You can also drag an open tab to the Windows taskbar and pin it, just like a normal application. Then, you can go directly to your favorites without even launching Internet Explorer.
There are several add-ons available, but the browser lacks some of the helpful extensions which you can find in Chrome or Firefox. However, you can see and manage a lot more information in IE 11, comparing to previous versions. You see the folders you’ve organized bookmarks into, and you can move bookmarks into the right folder there, too.
Also, you can see which site you saved passwords for and sync them between all the devices with your Microsoft account. If you opened a site on a different device, there is no need to search for it or remember the URL because you can see the list of tabs from your other PCs. If you know you’ll want to come back to a page later you can also share the link to the new Reading List.
Internet Explorer 11 has useful built-in features to help you remain anonymous online. There is a private browsing mode called InPrivate which doesn’t store web history and cookies. However, you should remember that your provider can still see the sites you visit.
In addition, there is a Do Not Track feature enabled by default, and a Tracking Protection List that ensures advertisers keep their hands off your data.
