Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition runs in the background and removes and defends against viruses, Trojans, rootkits, spyware, and all types of malicious software, comparing software to known malware signatures. This easy-manageable utility offers a real-time basic protection.
And it does its job. The program showed great results during the test, conducted by German lab AV-Test Institute. It caught 100% of zero-day, previously unseen threats, and widespread malware on Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 evaluations. It earned 6 of 6 points for protection and usability and 5.5 for performance, gaining 17.5 in total. Such results take BitDefender to the top products. It earned Advanced+ certification in the AV-Comparatives’ five tests, matching Kaspersky Anti-Virus, which costs $59.99.
BitDefender Antivirus Free Edition's main window is a small gray panel in the right bottom corner of the screen. It’s rather tiny and can be a struggle for older eyes.
This panel contains key BitDefender features Virus Shield, AutoScan and My BitDefender with switches to turn them on and off. You can’t run a full scan from this window. You need to right-click the Bitdefender icon in the Windows task tray and select Full System Scan.
When installing, BitDefender doesn’t change browser settings, nor installs any toolbars, unlike other free programs. To use free BitDefender for more than 30 days, sign up for an account. Besides, an account allows you to use the Safepay secure browser, which is secure for online shopping and banking, has password manager and virtual keyboard to defeat spyware, while BitDefender doesn’t have these features.
BitDefender offers automated protection. You can’t initiate full or quick scan, and the only option is to scan specific folders, files, hard drives or USB drives. Note that BitDefender doesn’t automatically scan USB drives when they’re connected. You can’t really customize anything, besides on/off switches. There is no option of scheduled scan either.
It’s a perfect option for those who prefer set-it-and-forget-it approach, especially as BitDefender uses little RAM and CPU, running so smooth and fluid that it’s hard to tell it’s even working. But this lack of control can be a dealbreaker for those who prefer to have a possibility to customize everything.
Unlike most of the free antiviruses, BitDefender doesn’t have reminders to upgrade to a paid version or in-your-face stats of your subscription. It’s that unobtrusive.
Cross-platform use 5/5
Works on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8/10 32/64 bit. There are BitDefender products for Mac OS and Android.
The Bottom Line
BitDefender Free Edition offers a high level of protection and light performance impact. If you prefer to install programs and leave them doing their job, free BitDefender is for you. It’s safe and trustable but lacks some basic features as quick and scheduled scan.Collapse
